چکیده

The distribution of light in the canopy is a major factor regulating the growth and development of a plant. The main variables of interest are the amount of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) reachingdifferent elements of the plant canopy, and the quality (spectral composition) of light reaching these elements. A light environment model based onMonte Carlo (MC) path tracing of photons, capable of computing both PARand the spectral composition of light, was developed by M ech (1997), and can be conveniently interfaced with virtual plants expressed using the open L-system formalism. To improve the efficiency of the light distribution calculations provided byM ech’sMonteCarlo program,we have implemented a similar programQuasiMC, which supports amore efficient randomised quasi-MonteCarlo samplingmethod (RQMC).We have validated QuasiMC by comparing it with MonteCarlo and with the radiosity-based CARIBU software (Chelle et al. 2004), andwe show that these two programs produce consistent results. We also assessed the performance of theRQMCpath tracing algorithm by comparing it with Monte Carlo path tracing and confirmed that RQMC offers a speed and/or accuracy improvement over MC. Additional keywords: light simulation, open L-system, PAR, path tracing, red/far red ratio, (randomised) quasi-Monte Carlo sampling, variance reduction, virtual plant modelling.

Quasi-Monte Carlo Simulation of the Light Environment of Virtual Plants

The distribution of light in the canopy is a major factor regulating the growth and development of a plant. Consequently, simulation of light environment is an important component of functionalstructural plant modelling. The main variables of interest are the quantity of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) reaching different elements of the plant canopy, and the quality (spectral composit...

Application of Monte Carlo Simulation in the Assessment of European Call Options

In this paper, the pricing of a European call option on the underlying asset is performed by using a Monte Carlo method, one of the powerful simulation methods, where the price development of the asset is simulated and value of the claim is computed in terms of an expected value. The proposed approach, applied in Monte Carlo simulation, is based on the Black-Scholes equation which generally def...

Presenting a New Algorithm for Determining Optimal Replaceable Capacity of Conventional Power Plants by Renewable Power Plants Based on Monte Carlo Method

Given the substitution process of generators using renewable energy sources instead of conventional generators in modern power systems, this paper proposes a Monte Carlo based method to determine an optimal level of this change. At first, LOLE index of the system was calculated without wind power to obtain the reference index. Then, the wind turbine units are replaced with the conventional gene...

A New Methodology for Frequency Estimation of Second or Higher Level Domino Accidents in Chemical and Petrochemical Plants Using Monte Carlo Simulation

Some of the most destructive accidents of 1980s and 90s which occurred in process industries were domino accidents. Although domino accidents are among the most destructive industrial accidents, there are not much pioneering works done on quantification of them. The analytical formulation of the domino accidents is usually complex and need a deep knowledge of probability rules. Even if the ...
